Setting Up a Z-Wave Thermostat Using the Leviton Primary Controller

Enrolling (Including) a Z-Wave Thermostat on the Z-Wave Network: 

  1. Apply power to the thermostat.  Within 5 seconds, “Remote” should appear of the thermostat.  If “Remote” does not appear, check the tstat address to make sure it is set to 1 – if the Address is set to 1, the Z-Wave board within the thermostat is not communicating with the thermostat.  Make sure the thermostat has the transformer common connected.  If the transformer is connected and “Remote” doesn’t appear during power up, the thermostat must be repaired/replaced.
  2. If the Leviton Primary Controller has not been used before, you will be prompted to “Start Installation Checklist”.  Select “Yes”.
    If the Leviton Primary Controller has been used before, press the “Menu” button to display the “Main Menu”.  From the “Main Menu”, highlight the “7.System Setup” button and press the center button.
    1. Highlight “1.Install Checklist” and press the center button.
    2. You will be prompted to “Start Installation Checklist”.  Select “Yes”.
    3. Highlight “1.Include Dim/Switch” and press the center button.
    4. You will be prompted to “Press button on Dimmer/Switch”.
  3. Bring the Leviton Primary Controller close to the thermostat to be included, and press the “Hold” button on the thermostat.
    If the Primary Controller is able to communicate with the thermostat, “UPDATING” will appear on the display.  Once complete, “Thermostat” and the “Device #” will be displayed. Press the center button.  “Node Excluded” and the “Node ID#” will be displayed.  Write down the Node ID #. 
    If the Primary Controller in unable to communicate with the thermostat, after several seconds, “Node could not be included! Check device inclusion instructions” will be displayed.
  4. Press [·] to move to the next step.
  5. Highlight “Include Dim/Swch” and press the center button to enroll another thermostat.


Enrolling (Including) the Leviton Vizia RF to RS232 serial bridge on the Z-Wave Network: 

  1. From the “Install Checklist”, highlight the “2.Include Controller” and press the center button.  “Place controller in programming mode.  See Instruction sheet” will be displayed.
  2. Press and hold the button on the Leviton Vizia RF to RS232 serial bridge until it blinks amber.
  3. Press the center button to begin the enrolling process.
    If the Primary Controller is able to communicate with the Leviton Vizia RF to RS232 serial bridge, “UPDATING” will appear on the display. 
    If the Primary Controller in unable to communicate with the thermostat, after several seconds, “Node could not be included! Check device inclusion instructions” will be displayed.
  4. Press “Back” when complete. 

Associating Z-Wave Thermostats:

Associating each Z-Wave thermostat with the Leviton Vizia RF to RS232 serial bridge is necessary for two-way communications with the HAI controller.

  1. From the “Install Checklist”, highlight the “5.Set Associations” and press the center button.

a.       Highlight the thermostat to be associated and press the center button.

b.      From the “Device Assoc” menu, highlight the “2.Associations…” and press the center button.

c.       Highlight the Leviton Vizia RF to RS232 serial bridge in the list and press the “+” button on the Primary Controller to put a check in the list box.

d.      Press the center button. 

  1. To associate additional thermostats, press “Back” and repeat Step 1.
  2. When complete, press “Back” several times until you return to the default profile.

Removing (Excluding) a Z-Wave Thermostat from the Z-Wave Network:

  1. From the “Main Menu”, highlight the “7.System Setup” button and press the center button.
  2. From the “System Setup” menu, highlight “Advanced” and press the center button.
  3. When “Advanced Settings?” is displayed, select “Yes”.
  4. From the “Advanced” menu, highlight the “1.Network” and press the center button.
    1. Highlight the “2.Exclude Node” and press the center button.
    2. When “Prepare Device to be excluded” is displayed, press the center button.
  5. Bring the Leviton Primary Controller close to the thermostat to be excluded, and press the “Hold” button on the thermostat.
    If the Primary Controller is able to communicate with the thermostat, “UPDATING” will appear on the display.  Once complete, “Excluded!” will be displayed along with the “Node #” that was excluded. 
    If the Primary Controller in unable to communicate with the thermostat, after several seconds, “Node Exclude Fail”.  Press the center button and repeat Step 5.
    Note: When a thermostat is excluded, all “Associations” with that device will also be deleted.
  6. When complete, press “Back” several times until you return to the default profile.
